Following are the eligibility requirements for admission into the Alternate Training Scheme to become Marine Engineers (ATS) conducted by CSSM:
Educational Qualifications
- A pass in +2/Intermediate/PUC/HSC or any equivalent with 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry & Maths. 50% separately in English is a must in 10th std. or +2 std. OR
- Diploma holders OR B.Sc., degree holders are also eligible and they can apply on the basis of their +2 background with 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics and separately 50% in English.
Physical Standards
Candidates wishing to join Marine Engineering must be Medically and Physically Fit as per Merchant Shipping (Medical Examinations) Rules, 2000 and Medical Examination (Seafarers) Convention 73, under ILO Convention 147.
Following are the basic requirements:

Note: In case of Lakshadweep, Amindivi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam and other hill areas including those from Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tirupura, Garhwar and Sikkim the candidate’s height may be reduced by 5 cm and proportionately the minimum weight should be 45kgs.
Candidates should undergo the following medical tests in any private or Government diagnostic centres (with a Government approved Doctors) prior to applying for the course, and attach the photocopies of the medical reports along with application. Original medical reports must be submitted at the time of interview.
Blood Test: HB %, TC, DC, ESR, Blood platelet count, VDRL, Blood grouping and RH typing
X - RAY : Chest PA
ECG in all leads
Urine analysis.
Eye test, Ear test
